After the Clutter: 5 Steps to a New Daily Routine
I've noticed that in the two years since the major de-cluttering of my apartment, clutter has been creeping back in.
Making Space - Letting Go of Clutter
To make room for new things to come into you life, you have to create space for such things. If your environment or life is packed with things you no longer need or that no longer serve you, then you are holding yourself back. There?s no room for new opportunities, new relationships or new ideas to enter. Yesterday I had a conversation with a client about this very topic. I congratulated the client on cleaning out items associated with her previous career from her home office to make room for all the new ventures she is exploring. I was reminded of what I went through when I decided to switch careers. When I first became a coach, I was hesitant to toss or give away all the business materials I had accumulated as a financial professional. I kept thinking, ?What if I need these items again?? I finally realized that my indecisiveness, (about giving up the security that these materials provided - thinking I could always go back to my former career), was holding me back. After this realization I immediately tackled my office and cleared out 9 trash bags of old business files. Guess what happened? The next day I had a new client!
Thinking Outside the Box
Much of my time as a Professional Organizer is spent helping people to put things into containers and boxes. But, success in this business requires as much thinking ?outside the box? as it does about putting things into containers. I was reminded of this recently, while consulting with clients who own a large, well-appointed suburban home. Two of the issues that the clients presented were the lack of closet space on the main floor, and the constant clutter on a small, built-in desk. Limited closet space resulted in coats? being deposited in the front entry. Shoes were removed inside the garage and dropped on the floor, by the other door into the house. The homeowners were tired of tripping on shoes. And the last thing they wanted (guests) to see was a wall of coats hanging in the foyer. So, the challenge was clear: This active family needed more closet space.
Digging out of Paper Clutter - part 1
Digging out from under stacks of paper might seem like a daunting and insurmountable task. Let?s face it, paper can be intimidating and overwhelming. It comes relentlessly and without warning, and it never stops coming - bills, insurance policies, faxes, to-do lists, invoices, tax information, user manuals, receipts, itineraries...Add in the magazines, brochures, drafts, booklets, letters, drafts, etc., and it?s easy to see how paper molehills become paper mountains. And here?s the worst part - somewhere in this ever-growing mound of chaos lies your business - important phone numbers, bills that have to be paid, clients that need attention, receivables that need collecting?
Digging out of Paper Clutter - part 2
We previously noted that papers must be sorted before they can be properly filed. Continuing from our last article, your sort has left you with two piles - ?to file? and ?to throw away/recycle.? You?ve tossed the garbage/recycling, so now you have a stack of papers to file. Let?s finish the sort, and create a basic filing system. Keep in mind three things:

Addiction to Clutter
Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find that at least half the people raised their hands.
Spring Makeovers: Organizing Tips for the Home and a Virtual Makeover for You
Winter is starting to retreat, and hints of Spring are everywhere. Time to clear away the clutter and get you and your house in order. The benefits of a clean and organized home will translate into a calm, collected state psychologically. Although I'm not a Feng Shui expert, I do believe in the flow of energy within a home. When energy is blocked in a room, you don't want to spend time there. At the very least, it feels good to have minimal clutter and a bright living space.
Success at Work : Techniques : A Cluttered Desk
I followed my boss to a co-worker's cubicle where my boss requested a certain document from the co-worker. The actual surface of the co-workers desk was not visible because it was covered with a cluttered pile of papers, catalogs, booklets, and other paraphernalia. I was prepared to see my co-worker embarass himself by not being able to locate the requested document in that messy pile.

Calendars and Personality Type
I recently conducted a survey to look at the relationship between an individual?s personality type and his or her organizing and time management style, and noticed that the majority of participants said they have a calendar system that works for them. As there are so many time management systems available, both paper-based and electronic, I thought it would be interesting to find out which calendar systems are most popular with each personality type, and asked my ezine subscribers and visitors to my website to describe their time management system, what they like and dislike about it, and their personality type according to the Myers-Briggs Type IndicatorŪ (MBTIŪ). The MBTI measures your preferences in four areas:

Finish in Style - Organizing Works!
One of my mother-in-law's many oft-quoted and wise declarations was "Finish in style." What Clutter Clearing Can Do For You
You can get a pretty good idea of the benefits of clutter clearing simply by imagining your life free of all the negative effects of clutter: lack of focus and clarity; feelings of being professionally, creatively, spiritually, and/or romantically stuck; insufficient time and attention for self and family; increased stress, irritability and depression. Wouldn't it be great to be free of all these?

Compartmentalize
The word "compartmentalize" means to separate into distinct parts. I am intrigued with the fact that the word "mental" is in the word. For me, it illustrates the need to separate mentally what we are doing. One of the tricks I am learning is to separate tasks and do one at a time. As a recovering multitasker that isn't easy, but I am beginning to see the benefits of doing one thing at a time.
Ending The Morning Madness
Back-to-school time ? what does that mean to you? For some people, it's shopping for school supplies, gearing up for PTA meetings, and artwork taped to the refrigerator. Morning should be an enjoyable time for you and your kids ? not a battle of the wills or a race against the clock. But you can make the "morning mambo" go a lot smoother, with a little advance preparation and some good organizing techniques!

How Clutter Affects Your Love Life
Clutter in any area of your home is a sign of stuck, stagnant energy. The more clutter you have, the more sluggish the energy becomes. When the areas of your home associated with romance are cluttered and untidy, your love life is affected as well. From a feng shui perspective, the three places in your home that have the strongest impact on your love life are your bedroom, the Relationship Area (I'll tell you how to find that in a moment), and the space around your front door. Are You Stuck In The Clutter Trap?
You arrived on earth without clutter. Your parents and doting relatives started you on a pathway to accumulation. By the time you were a year old, you had mounds of functional clothing, twenty outfits suitable for dress-up, too many stuffed animals to fit in your bed, custom-sized furniture, a silver spoon, and a plastic Winnie-the-Pooh bowl. Perhaps there was also your christening gown: an heirloom already packed safely away waiting for the next generation.
